Lymphoedema Management

Lymphoedema is the abnormal accumulation of protein-rich fluid accompanied by chronic low-grade inflammation and tissue fibrosis. It can be classified as either primary (congenital or hereditary) or secondary (acquired from trauma or medical treatment).

The gold standard treatment for lymphoedema is Decongestive Lymphatic Therapy (DLT), also known as Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT). This includes:

  • Compression therapy (bandaging and/or garments)
  • Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
  • Skin care and infection prevention
  • Decongestive exercise
  • Activity modification and patient education
  • Adjunct therapies such as Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), Deep Oscillation Therapy and Sequential Intermittent Pneumatic Compression (SIPC)

Treatment Goals

The aim of treatment is to reduce swelling to the lowest and most manageable level possible, improving comfort, mobility, and skin health. Using gentle, evidence-based techniques, DLT supports the body’s remaining healthy lymphatic pathways to enhance drainage and stability. Ongoing care focuses on maintaining results and preventing fluid build-up through compression, skin care, and self-management strategies—helping you achieve and maintain a comfortable, sustainable new normal.

Compression Bandaging

Compression bandaging plays a vital role in the intensive phase of treatment, helping to reduce swelling and shape the limb. Short-stretch bandages are used for their firm, supportive pressure, and it’s recommended to have two full sets for hygiene and effectiveness. We supply both complete kits and individual options, including Coban and Comprilan, which can stay comfortably in place for several days. Your bandaging plan is tailored to your lifestyle, mobility, and level of home support.

Compression Garments

Once your lymphoedema is stabilised and enters the maintenance phase, we can arrange suitable compression garments to help maintain your results. Depending on your needs, these may be off-the-shelf or custom-made, with fittings tailored to ensure comfort and effectiveness. Garments can take from overnight to up to 6 weeks for delivery. Eligible patients may also receive financial support through the Queensland Health Compression Garment Program.

Primary vs Secondary Lymphoedema

Primary lymphoedema occurs when the lymphatic system doesn’t develop properly, including:

  • Lymphoedema associated with genetic syndromes
  • Lymphoedema linked to systemic or internal lymphatic problems
  • Congenital lymphoedema
  • Late-onset lymphoedema
  • Lymphatic malformations ± overgrowth disorders

Secondary lymphoedema develops when the lymphatic system is damaged, blocked, overwhelmed. Common causes include:

  • Cancer treatment (lymph node removal, radiation)
  • Surgery or trauma
  • Repeated infections (cellulitis)
  • Chronic venous insufficiency
  • Inflammatory or systemic conditions (eg rheumatoid arthritis)
  • Prolonged immobility
