Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is an advanced therapy that encourages the natural process of the lymphatic vessels to eliminate waste products and to boost your body’s defenses.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, advanced therapeutic technique that supports the natural movement of lymph through the body’s lymphatic vessels. This treatment encourages the removal of waste products and excess fluid from tissues, while also helping to boost immune function and reduce inflammation.

MLD is not only a clinical treatment for lymphatic conditions—it can also promote general well-being by supporting detoxification, calming the nervous system, and offering a deep sense of relaxation.

How Does MLD Work?

Through gentle, rhythmic, and specific movements applied to the skin, MLD:

  • Stimulates the absorption and flow of lymph
  • Reduces tissue congestion and oedema
  • Supports immune function and detoxification
  • Activates the parasympathetic nervous system (relaxation response)

“To put the effect of MLD in a nutshell, it causes body fluids to flow, removes waste products from connective tissue, rectifies metabolic dysfunction in the interstitium, supports the immune system, balances the nervous system and relieves congestion.” – Dr. Emil Vodder

Indications for MLD

  • Lymphoedema (prevention and ongoing management)
  • Lipoedema
  • Oedema from injury or immobility
  • Post-surgical swelling (including liposuction, orthopaedic, or dental surgery)
  • Sinusitis, hay fever, or other upper respiratory congestion
  • Scar tissue reduction and post-radiation therapy

  • Chronic fatigue syndrome and general fatigue
  • Detoxification and immune support

Precautions and Contraindications

Although MLD is very gentle, there are some cases where caution is required such as in the presence of untreated heart failure, acute infections, or active blood clots. I will always review your health history before beginning treatment.

MLD for Relaxation & General Wellness

MLD can also be enjoyed as a one-off treatment to reduce stress, encourage fluid movement, and leave you feeling lighter and more balanced. Think of it as a gentle “reset” for your body—a chance to support your lymphatic system while deeply relaxing your mind.

For specific conditions like lymphoedema or post-surgical swelling, a series of treatments may be required to achieve noticeable and lasting results. I will work with you to tailor a treatment plan that aligns with your goals and health needs.

A Note on Medical Conditions

If you have a medical condition—especially one involving the lymphatic, vascular, or immune system—it’s important that Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is performed by a therapist with specific training in Decongestive Lymphatic Therapy (DLT).
As a qualified DLT practitioner, I ensure every treatment is delivered safely, with clinical reasoning and appropriate modifications for complex or medically vulnerable clients. Not all massage therapists have this level of specialist training, so you can feel confident your care is in skilled, experienced hands.
