Oncology Massage

Gentle, respectful, and nurturing care for people living with cancer.

Oncology Massage is a very light and relaxing massage technique specifically adapted for individuals undergoing or recovering from cancer treatment. It is suitable during all stages of the cancer journey — whether you're in active treatment, pre- or post-surgery, recovering from radiation, in remission, or at risk of lymphoedema.

Each session is carefully tailored to your current health status, energy levels, and comfort. Areas affected by treatment, such as tumour sites, ports, PICC lines, or surgical scars, are always avoided or handled with utmost caution to ensure a safe and supportive experience.

Integrating Decongestive Lymphatic Therapy

As part of your care, I may integrate Decongestive Lymphatic Therapy (DLT) into your massage plan. This includes:

  • Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
  • Compression therapy (bandaging and/or garments)
  • Skin care
  • Gentle exercise recommendations
  • Activity modification and education
  • Supportive adjunct therapies
    • Sequential Intermittent Pneumatic Compression (SIPC)
    • Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)
    • Deep Oscillation Therapy (DOT)

These techniques are especially beneficial for clients with or at risk of lymphoedema, helping manage swelling, promote healing, and restore comfort.

Benefits of Oncology Massage

  • Reduces anxiety, stress, and muscle tension
  • Promotes restful sleep and relaxation
  • Improves circulation and gentle lymphatic flow
  • Supports pain relief and reduces fatigue
  • Enhances a sense of calm, connection, and well-being

Many clients report feeling more whole and positive about their body after a session.

When Oncology Massage Should Be Avoided or Delayed

Oncology massage is generally very safe when provided by a trained therapist. However, there are times when treatment may need to be postponed or modified. You should avoid or delay massage if:

  • You have a fever or active infection
  • You are experiencing uncontrolled nausea or vomiting
  • You have unmanaged deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or are at high risk of clotting
  • You feel too fatigued or unwell to tolerate touch
  • There is a severe skin reaction from radiation or chemotherapy
  • You are within 24 hours of chemotherapy or radiation, unless cleared by your oncologist
  • You have fragile or non-intact skin, open wounds, or new surgical incisions
  • You are experiencing severe low blood counts (e.g., neutropenia or thrombocytopenia) and have not been cleared by your doctor
